It’s that time of year when many people are caught in the abyss that lies between the end of summer and the beginning of school.

But aside from that demographic, or including them if they are willing and able, Austin will host several upcoming events that don’t come around too often. They’re all packed into this weekend, too.

•Don’t look too far ahead, as the first notable event happens 7 p.m. tonight at the Paramount Theatre. It’s Matchbox Children’s Theatre’s production of “CSI Neverland,” a modern Peter Pan spin-off. It’s the second, and final showing of the production of which 33 cast members worked on and is the largest Matchbox production yet.

•Another not-so-common events is a bagpipe walk at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center, 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27. Among soothing sounds and stress relievers, the walk serves two important purposes: a tribute to former Pastor Don Deines and a benefit for Alzheimer’s. The event is free. Afterward, the public can help by purchasing tickets to the 7 p.m. Doug Wood and Wild Spirit Band concert at the Paramount Theatre. The $10 tickets will all go toward Alzheimer’s research.

•Though there are more interesting events later in the week, this weekend is hard to overlook. The Holiday Inn will host its Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre 6 p.m. Saturday. The theme includes a ‘60s Rock and Roll vibe, where audience members must guess who committed the murder. Tickets are $21.95 and include two drink vouchers.

The next week begins with the re-opening of the YMCA on Monday, after it finishes its annual cleaning. Other notable events include the Seibel Center’s Sweets and Sounds at the Paramount Theatre Monday evening, along with several fundraisers.
