Senior helps form new AHS groups
Austin High School is getting a little help. Only this time it’s students helping each other as well as the school and community.
That’s what AHS senior Matt Lunning envisioned when he petitioned school officials to create two new student groups this year.
Project Team will be a student-to-student tutoring group where students can gather at designated areas to study throughout the year. The group will meet Tuesdays during lunch, Wednesdays after school and Thursdays before school.
Though a few details remain, the group is expected to launch within weeks.
“At the end of the day, we’ve got really good kids across the school,” said AHS Principal Brad Bergstrom. “But when you have juniors and seniors step up like that, it’s just amazing.”
Student Union is another new group where students volunteer throughout the community. The group has about 25 members thus far, all of whom worked on SU’s first big fundraiser for the Mower County Red Cross. The group is open to anyone at the high school.
