Keeping with Mexican tradition
Olivia Gonzalez knows what makes a good family. She reaches out on a daily basis from her work at the Community Learning Center to help the Hispanic community in Austin get the resources they need to make good decisions for their families.
That’s why she won the 2011 Proud to be a Latino Volunteer Award.
“I’m so blessed to know her,” said Miguel Garate, one of the organizers of the annual Mexican Independence celebration. “She does so much for the community.”
Gonzalez felt humbled to accept the award as her husband stood on, looking proud.
“It’s an honor,” she said.
The award is given annually in keeping with a Mexican tradition to honor a resident who volunteers for the community and stands out in their willingness to help others.
