Remembering those soldiers who served and died for our country

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that occurs every year on the final Monday of May.

Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War.

By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars.

It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end. Memorial Day is coming Monday, and the unofficial beginning of summer is always a good weekend for sales and picnics.

This year we are inviting you to come and celebrate with us at our picnic in the parking lot on Friday.

We are serving up hotdogs, loaded baked potatoes, beans, cookies and a beverage. We’re going to have it rain or shine. Cost is only $5 per person. We will be serving between 4 and 5:30 p.m. Bring a friend. To purchase tickets stop by the front desk or call 433-2370 ext 6 for more information.

The Senior Center now has an AED machine. If you are interested in learning how to use this machine in the case of an emergency, the Red Cross will be here doing a training session at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. All are welcome. There is no charge for this class.

Also on Wednesday is a Medicare 101 class starting at 6 pm.

If you are new to Medicare or getting close to retirement this is the class for you. Come with your questions or get informed about how it works. See you there.

You are always welcome at the Senior Center
