The National Guard 224th Transportation Company only has a few months left before it comes back to Austin.

Renovations on the Austin National Guard Armory are set to wrap up this fall, according to Sgt. David Gansen. That means the 224th, which has been in Rochester since the armory renovations began last November, could be back in October or November.

“We’re excited to get back to the community,” Gansen said. “It does create some hardships for some, and of course we do have some members from the Rochester area, but all in all the unit’s excited to come back and have a place to call home — their home.”

Austin’s armory is about 22,000 square feet and was built in 1964. The renovations should make the building more energy efficient and could allow for guardsmen to make better use of the space, according to Gansen.

“The big thing is the energy efficiency of the facility is going to be much nicer,” he said. “The building was in need of repair.”
