Riverland to showcase musical talent, variety

Two first-time events are happening this week at the Historic Paramount Theatre.

At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Riverland Community College music students past and present will perform “Spread Your Wings,” the first ever celebration of Riverland musical talent at the Paramount.

Featured groups will include the college choir, the vocal ensemble frequency and the newly-formed alumni ensemble, The Riverland Connection.

Sandy (May) Bravo-Calixto, a finalist on America’s Got Talent, will be the special guest alum performer. Other alumni performers include Pamela Koser, Natalie Bunnell, Amelia Holcomb, Alice Holst, Kaye Perry, Lia Culbert, Kirsten Lindbloom, Travis Kasper, Tyler Irvin, Robert Johnson, and Jerry Girton.

Concert selections will include songs from the hit musicals “Smokey Joe’s Café” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” folk songs from Rutter’s “The Sprig of Thyme,” religious songs, Etta James’s hit “At Last,” The Beatles’ “Blackbird,” and other pop hits.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $3 for students in advance. All tickets are $2 more at the door.

The Whitesidewalls return to Paramount

The upper Midwest’s premier doo-wop, rockabilly and rock ‘n’ roll band, The Whitesidewalls will return to the Paramount at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Although they have performed at the Paramount in the past, they are venturing from their traditional concert format into a more theatrical one.

“Love Potion #10” is a two-act musical featuring comedy, intrigue, romance and the great songs of the golden age of rock ‘n’ roll.

It tells the story of six days in 1964 at a small-town high school through the eyes and ears of Michael Patrick “Records” Ryan, a disc jockey from WDGY AM in the Twin Cities.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $22 at the door. Tickets for both events can be purchased online at paramounttheatre.org or by calling 434-0934.
