Adeline R. Gruis, 81

Adeline R. Gruis, 81, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at NewAldaya Lifescapes, Cedar Falls.

She was born Feb. 6, 1933, in Aplington, Iowa, daughter of Arend and Lizzy Bunk Abbas. She married Rev. Herman H. Gruis Jr. on April 10, 1953, in Ackley, Iowa. He died Oct. 31, 2004.

She graduated from Aplington High School and received a teaching certificate from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She later earned a BA in elementary education and library science from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Mich. She taught in Hollandale Christian School; was a teacher of the hearing impaired in Edgerton, Minn.; school librarian in Clara City, Minn. and a public librarian in Prophetstown, Ill.

Survived by: three daughters, Beverly (Thomas) Gallagher of New Windsor, N.Y.; Linda (Michael) Squires of Cedar Falls; and Susan (Rev. Stephan) Hielkema of Gahanna, Ohio; a son, Duane Gruis of St. Louis, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a brother, George (Jane) Abbas.

Preceded in death by: a sister, Arlene Abbas.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Richardson Funeral Service, Cedar Falls, with burial in Clarks Grove Cemetery, Clarks Grove, Minn. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
