Authorities remove 3-foot pipe bomb from vehicle in St. Marys ramp

ROCHESTER — Authorities have removed a 3-foot-long pipe bomb from a vehicle on the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester.

Traffic near the clinic was diverted Thursday as authorities removed the pipe bomb from the trunk of a vehicle inside the Generose Building parking ramp on the Saint Marys Hospital campus.

The pipe weighed 50 to 60 pounds and had caps on each end and a wick. Crews pried open the trunk and took the bomb to a safe location to detonate it.

Mayo officials said there was no stated threat to the facility and no patients or staff were at risk.

Authorities cleared the scene by early evening. They are continuing to investigate how the pipe bomb got into the parking ramp.
