Red Cedar Chapter, NSDAR

The Red Cedar Chapter met at the home of Alice Anderson on Dec. 13. Alice presented the program, “Recommendations/Guidelines for the DAR Medal of Honor Award. The Ritual was recited and the President General’s message was read by Judy Brown. This annual Christmas luncheon is also the Red Cedar’s way of honoring and remembering our brave Veterans. At this meeting the following new and used items were collected for the Veterans Hospital at Hastings: Comfort items, new playing cards, new T-shirts, 270 paper back books and 25 hardcover books, women’s blouses, lap robes, and men’s shirts.

The National Defender Report, which was read by Marilyn Prenosil, gave the history of the “pocket flag,” a small tri-cornered folded flag that fits into a shirt pocket. A project to provide pocket-sized flags to deployed servicemen and women was founded in 1991 by the Boy Scouts.

Throughout the years this flag project has been supported by numerous DAR chapters and state societies.

During this past year, the Red Cedar has sent four boxes of new clothing and comfort items to the Chaplain’s Clothes Closet for Project Patriot in Landstuhl, Germany. When active duty military personnel are severely injured, they are sent by medevac to Landstuhl. The Landstuhl Regional Medical Center is the largest American hospital outside of the United States. The DAR Project Patriot Committee coordinates with the Landstuhl Chaplain’s Office to identify needed clothing items. Also, two boxes of comfort items, candy and games were packed and sent to military personnel via Operation Minnesota Nice. The Red Cedar honors and remembers the brave men and women who serve or have served our country. We thank them for their service and for honoring our great nation.

We also thank Sy Schaefer of the VFW, and those who help him, for picking up the collected items for our Veterans and making the delivery to Hastings Hospital, something the VFW has done for the Red Cedar for many years. After winter recess, the next meeting of the Red Cedar will be April 9.

 Y Women

Y’s Women held their Christmas party on Dec.11 at the Hormel Historic Home. Members enjoyed the hors d’ oeuvres potluck and also dessert which was served by Sue Apold, Marlys Dunlop and Sharon Jensen.

A donation was made to HyVee for the Feed A Family Program.

The next meeting will be at 2 p.m. on Jan. 8, at the Cedars. The program on wellness will be given by Cathy Ehley.
