City to vote on Ward 3 polling place

Austin residents in Ward 3 may soon have a new polling place.

Following the recent redistricting of the city’s wards, the City Council will vote on a resolution to change the Ward 3, Precinct 1 polling location during its regularly scheduled April 16 meeting. The polling place would move from Woodson School to the Mower County Senior Center.

Later in the meeting, the council will decide whether to approve installation of a school sign on Fourth Avenue NW between Fifth and Sixth streets and a stop sign on 18th Street SE at First Avenue.

The council will also consider whether to place a permanent handicap parking sign at 106 10th St. SW. The sign would benefit a citizen who is unable to use the driveway at her residence and would like to reserve the spot for those who provide her transportation.

At the request of Austin resident Susan Strack, the council will hear a public appeal to its April 2 decision declaring Strack’s pit bull a dangerous dog and ordering its euthanasia. After reviewing the facts of the case, the council will decide whether to uphold its previous decision. If it does so, the dog will be held for 14 days, then put down.

During the meeting, the council will also approve engineering services for its North Main flood mitigation project and consider a street closing request the Veterans of Foreign Wars put in for an annual car show. The street closing would close Third Avenue NE from the Mower County Senior Citizen Center to Second Street NE and Second Street from Third Avenue to Fourth Avenue on May 19.

At a committee works session following the meeting, the council will look into renewing the lease agreement between Austin Utilities and Northern Natural Gas and will hold a standard monthly budget discussion, this time for the city’s Park, Recreation and Forestry Department.
