Thief sentenced to probation
An Austin man was convicted of gross misdemeanor theft after rummaging through an apartment last fall.
Justin Jereme Jolly, 22, was sentenced last week to two years’ supervised probation and 90 hours of community service. He must pay $516 restitution. Charges for DWI and for fleeing an officer were dismissed.
Police went to apartments at the 200 block of 31st Street Southwest in Austin on Sept. 16 after a call at 4 a.m. of a burglary in progress. The caller saw a person going back and forth from the home to a vehicle and heard glass breaking.
When police arrived, they saw a Chevy Suburban with many items around it. A man lying on the ground behind the vehicle got up and ran into the apartments, according to the report.
Another person left the building shortly after and told police someone ran into his bedroom. Police went inside and arrested Jolly. He originally admitted he was drunk but denied stealing anything.
