High expected to reach 73 this week

Spring is feeling more like summer.

Though today shouldn’t break any records, this week’s projected temperatures in Austin should break several records for warm weather. Tuesday’s high of 68 degrees could be higher than the previous high of 62 set in 1997, while Wednesday’s record of 60 set in 1990 could be smashed as temperatures shoot as high as 73. Thursday’s high of 70 may be on par with the 70-degree day in 2003, and Friday’s high of 72 may match the 72-degree record also set n 2003. Monday’s record temperature was 65, set in 1990, while temperatures today could get as high as 59 degrees.

All this warm weather is due to an upper ridge of high pressure to the east of Minnesota and Wisconsin, according to the National Weather Service. NWS meteorologists say southwestern air flow is butting up against the ridge of high pressure, which is creating higher-than-average temperatures.

Though it’s tough to predict how warm it will be going into next week, the NWS predicts above average temperatures in March.

“We are looking for the rest of this month to be above normal temperatures,” said Dan Jones, NWS meteorologist.
